Virocid in a 1% solution with an action time of 30 minutes is sufficient to inactivate PRV, a new study from NMBU shows.

As many have probably noticed, today's announcement on kyst.no stated that NMBU in collaboration with the Veterinary Institute, Nofima, VESO and Xylem have looked closely at the problems surrounding the PRV virus. Piscint orthoreovirus is very widespread among Norwegian farmed salmon, where it causes the disease HSMB (Heart and Skeletal Muscle Inflammation). HSMB causes damage to the heart muscle and skeletal muscle. In case of an outbreak, the mortality rate varies greatly – from negligible to up to 20%

There is currently no vaccine against PRV, and biosecurity is therefore the most important aid when it comes to limiting and preventing infection.

In the study, it was found that Virocidi 1% concentration with an action time of 30 minutes is sufficient to inactivate the virus. We find this very pleasing and makes us even more confident that Virocid is a very important product for ensuring healthy fish - and good animal welfare.

The study also looked more closely at the effect of iodine – this is already effective at a concentration of 50ppm and an impact time of 10 minutes.

Furthermore, heat was investigated, and the virus was found to be very heat tolerant. Only at 76 degrees over 20 minutes was the virus inactivated. UV radiation at the strengths used in most facilities today was not effective enough to inactivate the virus.
