Salmon lice is what costs salmon industry the most per year. In addition, the amount of salmon lice controls (via the traffic light system) which producers are allowed to increase, must decrease or can continue with current production. The purpose of the traffic light system is to protect wild salmon, but lice also pose a health and welfare problem for farmed salmon.
If the lice limit is exceeded, the fish must be treated. Today there are many options for removing and protecting against lice, but one of the most important methods is still medical treatment.
Although the use of drugs against salmon lice has been greatly reduced in recent years, there is still a need for effective drugs. Reduced sensitivity and resistance is one of the biggest challenges when it comes to treatment against salmon lice, which means that research into new and effective methods and substances is still important.
