The biofilter is the heart of the RAS system. The main function is to ensure good water quality by converting ammonium from feed and the fish's gills, into the less toxic substance nitrate. The biofilter is also crucial to outcompete pathogens and harmful bacteria such as hydrogen sulphide or geosmin-producing bacteria.
